Private Flights to Mykonos Airport

One of the newer airports in the region, the Mykonos Airport originally opened in 1971 and serves the popular tourist destination of Mykonos. Located on the island of the same name, this airport is the gateway for many tourists wishing to visit the Greek islands.

One of the challenges of flying in and out of Mykonos is its geographical situation—the airport is located on an island. Many of the destinations that are served by Mykonos are only available seasonally, meaning that travelers from locations other than Athens wishing to travel directly to Mykonos must plan their trip accordingly.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MYKONOS AIRPORT

Mykonos Airport was first founded in 1971 to serve the increasingly popular tourist destination of Mykonos. In 2015, the airport was released from the control of the Greek government and privatized, and is now owned and controlled by the Fraport Group.

As part of its takeover of the Mykonos Airport, the Fraport Group has released plans for improving and modernizing the airport. Among other things, they wish to make for an improved customer experience by adding more check in counters to the terminal thereby reducing wait times. They also plan to both expand and remodel the Mykonos terminal and add more security gates to the airport. Lastly, the Fraport Group plans to improve the sanitary facilities of the airport and provide free Wi-Fi for all travelers. All in all, these changes are designed at reducing the wait times for customers traveling to and from Mykonos, while also making their wait more enjoyable with upgraded facilities and a remodeled terminal.

ATTRACTIONS IN AND AROUND MYKONOS

Mykonos has attractions for all types of visitors. For those wishing to stay in Mykonos itself and not travel around Greece, the Little Venice neighbourhood is a popular tourist destination. A quarter of the city overflowing with history, many of the old houses in this area have been converted into trendy bars and restaurants that cater to tourists. Although some recent travellers have complained that the area is become too crowded, nearly everyone seems to agree that the neighbourhood is undeniably beautiful.

For some sightseeing, Mykonos still has windmills that date to the sixteenth century—nearly five hundred years ago. There are sixteen windmills in total, and although they are no longer in use, they were used throughout history as a way to grind grain for the population of Mykonos before the advent of electricity. Positioned on top of a hill, going to see the windmills also allows for travellers to get great views of Mykonos itself. In addition to the windmills of Mykonos, the white walls of the Paraportiani Church are a striking sight to behold. This ancient church (supposedly on of 365 different churches on the island) dates to the Byzantines many centuries ago and still contains artwork that we can trace all the way back to the Middle Ages.

In addition to eating, drinking, and soaking up the sights of this wonderful city, the beaches of Mykonos are another attraction for many travellers. Paradise Beach, located at the southern end of the island is among the most popular destination for travellers. An abundance of nearby hotels mean that tourists can have nearly unlimited access to the beach and wonderful views of the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The beach itself is two miles south of the main city of Chora on the island, so it is accessible both by foot and by car. Furthermore, there are many bars and restaurants on the beach itself, meaning that visitors can truly be self-sufficient at the beach, not having to leave for days on end. The beach allows for visitors to soak up the sun earlier in the day and move on to parties at the many bars nearby at night.
